château de Pupetières
The Château de Pupetières is a 19th century castle in the commune of Châbons, in the department of Isère and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, in France. The family of Virieu has owned the estate since the thirteenth century, date of the construction of the primitive castle, then simple strong house. Between 1861 and 1866, Alphonse de Virieu, son of Aymon, decided to entrust the reconstruction of Pupetières to two architects: Denis Darcy, for the communes and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, for the castle in a neo-Gothic style.
The domain of Pupetières is also linked to the stay of the poet Alphonse de Lamartine who wrote there one of his most famous works, of romantic inspiration and entitled, Le Vallon, which, in turn, will inspire Countess Anna de Noailles. The castle and its communes are classified as historical monuments by order of 8 November 1972. Private property, however, the park and the building are open for visits, opening hours and the entrance fee being fixed by the owner.
