Church building
collégiale Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais de Gisors
The Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais church in Gisors is a parish Catholic church located in Gisors, Eure, France. Its oldest part is the central tower which rises above the cross of the transept. It dates from the last quarter of the 12th century.
The choir was built during the first half of the 13th century in the Gothic style of Île-de-France. Between the late 15th and mid 16th centuries, the church was enlarged and partly rebuilt in the flamboyant Gothic style. The second collaterals of the choir, the pseudo-deambulatory, the chapels of the bedside, the crusillons of the transept, the nave, its double sides and the tower to the left of the facade date from this time.
The large tower at the southwest corner was started in 1541, followed by the western facade of the nave. In rupture with the earlier parts, they display the Renaissance style. But the funds were scarce, the site was interrupted between about 1542 and 1558, and continued with great slowness until the end of the century.
The church, especially the big tower, remains unfinished. Nevertheless, its impressive proportions sometimes do it...
