About

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Sort chapel (in Catalan: Mare de Déu de la Sort) is a religious building located in Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans, in the French department of the Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region.

Description: The chapel takes the form of a Latin cross, facing north, whose ceiling of the nave is held by vaults in broken arches.

History: The Notre-Dame-de-la-Sort chapel was built from the 16th century, according to legend, after an epidemic of plague from which Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans was miraculously spared. It has been redesigned several times since then. The chapel is associated with miracles of healing, in the 19th and 20th centuries, soldiers from the village invoke Notre-Dame-de-la-Sort to preserve them from death. During the Retirada, Jean Bousquet, parish priest, kept the chapel open to welcome refugees.
