Darioritum, capital and oppidum of the city of the Venus is the Gallo-Roman name of Celtic origin of the present city of Vannes, founded at the end of the first century BC. The Romans established their colony on the northern shores of the Gulf of Morbihan, at the top of Boismoreau Hill, a site occupied continuously since the fifth century BC. In the 3rd century, the city was going to overflow the original site and occupy the hill of the Mené to the west, which, surrounded by its ramparts, now constitutes the historic heart of the city.
