Oppidum
Montlaures is an oppidum located a few kilometers northwest of Narbonne which was occupied from the fifth century BC until the Middle Ages. During protohistory, this oppidum belonging to the Elisyques was a strong and commercial place installed near the Aude. Even after the establishment of the Roman settlement of Narbonne from 118 B.C., the oppidum continued to be intensely occupied for almost 70 years before being gradually abandoned.
The excavations carried out at the Montlaurès site have delivered many objects (ceramics, coins, etc.) that allow to give some light on the inhabitants of the time, belonging to Ibero-Languec culture. The remains were classified as historical monuments by order of 16 February 1937.
