The Musée d'Art contemporain de Marseille, also known as "MAC", is the city's museum dedicated to contemporary art with collections of works from the 1960s to the present.
History: The MAC in Marseille opened in 1994, under the leadership of Bernard Blistène. In view of the reception by Marseille de Manifesta 13, the museum is being renovated from 2019 and is expected to reopen in April 2023.
Directions: The MAC is led by Philippe Vergne (in) from 1994 to 1997, in tandem with Bernard Blistène (Director of Museums) until 1996. Philippe Vergne succeeded Véronique Legrand from 1998 to 2000, under the auspices of Corinne Diserens, director of the Museums. Starting with the direction of Nathalie Ergino (2001-2005), the museum acquires the status of national museum when contemporary art becomes an area abandoned by the general management of the city's museums. She creates a "project-room" for young artists and organizes major exhibitions by Gilles Barbier, Jimmie Durham, Rodney Graham, Franz West, Ann Veronica Janssens, Carsten Höller.
