musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest
The Brest Museum of Fine Arts is the main art museum in the city of Brest, Brittany. The museum and its collections were recreated after the Second World War, the museum having been destroyed like most of the city during its bombing by Allied forces. With considerable effort, a collection of ancient paintings — the largest one to have been made in France since 1945 — was brought together.
It offers a panorama of French and Italian painting throughout the centuries. Modern painting is also present, although the museum has focused primarily on the creation of an ancient art collection that can be a witness to the past, for a city that lost almost all its heritage during the bombings. Completed in 1968, the museum building is typical of post-war functional architecture in Brest.
The discovery of mould on some paintings led to the closure of the museum for work in April 2025.
