Chatelet
porte Mordelaise
The Mordelaise gate (sometimes spelled plural) is an entrance châtelet, vestige of the ramparts of Rennes, in the French department of Ille-et-Vilaine in Brittany. Its location dates from the third century, at the creation of the first ramparts, but its architecture dates mainly from the fifteenth century. It was the main entrance to the city of Rennes.
It takes its name from the city of Mordelles, an important fief from the 11th century to which this entrance gives. The door was used as an entrance for the processions and its drawbridge provided double protection against attacks.
