Condate Riedonum, today Rennes, was the capital of the Riedone civitas under the Roman Empire. If traces of occupation are attested from prehistory, the site remains sparsely inhabited before being the object of a strong development operated by the Romans in the first century. The excavations carried out on the site, allowing the discovery of public buildings, temples, workshops and multiple dwellings, revealed the existence of a strong urbanization under the Roman Empire.

In addition, the city is organized by cardinals and decumani. The many objects of military origin raised questions about the identity of the founders of Condate, who might come from the Roman army. Located in the heart of an ideal topographical area, close to many urban roads and centres, in addition to Ille and Vilaine, Condate becomes the commercial hub of the region, as evidenced by the discovery of objects imported into the city and objects made in Condate outside the city.
