Church building
église Saint-Martin de Laval
Saint Martin Church is a church in Laval, Mayenne. It is located northwest of downtown, Rue Louis Perrin, in the former Faubourg Saint-Martin. It is dedicated to Martin de Tours, bishop of Tours in the fourth century.
The church was built in the second half of the 11th century. It was originally part of a priory of Benedictines which depended on the abbey of Marmoutier. In Romanesque style, the church is quite characteristic of the churches built in the 11th century in Mayenne.
It was transformed into a barracks during the French Revolution and was restored in the late 19th century. Currently in very poor condition, it is only open to visitors during guided tours. The church has been classified as historical monuments since December 11, 1979.
