About

The archaeological site of Alba-la-Romane, corresponding to the Gallo-Roman city of Alba Helviorum, is located near the present town of Alba-la-Romane, in the department of Ardèche, in the region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Alba was from the 1st to the 4th century AD, under the Roman Empire, the capital of the Gallic people of the Helvians whose territory covered the Lower Vivarais region. The city experienced its first development in the Augustan period (27 BC to 14 BC) and its peak in the second century.

A museum opened in October 2013. MuséAl includes the archaeological site, the museum and an archaeological repository. Around 1800, Jean-Paul Delichères made the first discoveries on the site.

Honoré Flaugergues began excavations around 1820. Jos Jullien and Frank Delarbre restart the excavations before World War II.
