Roman theatre
théâtre gallo-romain d'Alba-la-Romaine
Gallo-Roman theatre is a Gallo-Roman theatre located in the commune of Alba-la-Romane in the department of Ardèche in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The theatre is one of the elements of the monumental adornment of Alba Helviorum, capital of the Helvian civitas in ancient times. It was the subject of three successive phases of construction and development, towards the end of the first century BC, at the beginning of the first century and then at the beginning of the second century.
These stages are characterized by an expansion and monumentalization of the building which seems abandoned from the end of the third century. It has been classified as historical monuments since 10 July 1959, with a classification completed on 31 July 1986 at the same time as that of the entire archaeological site of Alba la Romaine. The theatre has been restored on many occasions, often as excavations progress.
The last restoration dates from 2019-2020 and a wooden scene was restored on the Aunas Creek.
