About

The towers of Castillon are an archaeological site located in Paradou (Bouches-du-Rhône) on the chain of the Pene (massif des Alpilles). The site is inhabited between the 2nd century BC and the 15th century, with a maximum population between the 13th and 14th centuries. It is then abandoned by its inhabitants for the benefit of a new village a few hundred meters north, now called Paradou.

Recent archaeological excavations have helped to reconstruct the history of this oppidum. The site can be visited today. There are three towers still standing from the Middle Ages that marked the boundaries of the ancient city.

Almost all of the rampart has disappeared. Archaeological excavations carried out between 1986 and 1990 revealed the existence of this oppidum, which was very damaged by time and clandestine excavations. The remains of the old castle and the castral village of Castillon located on the rocks of the Pene are registered under the title of the Historic Monuments by order of 24 July 2023.
