aqueduc et moulins de Barbegal
The aqueduct and the mills of Barbegal constitute a Roman hydraulic milling complex located in Fontvieille, near the city of Arles. This set was presented as "the greatest known concentration of mechanical power in the ancient world." The aqueduct has been partially classified as historic monuments since 12 July 1886, some of which have been registered since 5 February 1937.
Arles aqueducts: Around the middle of the first century, in order to bring running water to Arles, the Romans built a system of water supply consisting of two aqueducts fed by the springs of the Alpilles. The south aqueduct, called the Caparoon, about ten kilometers, built along the hill of the Defences of Subteyran, captures the sources above Maussane and Paradou, up to the valley of the Arcs south of Fontvieille. The second, called from Saint-Rémy or Eygalières, runs along the north of the massif, until Ernaginum (Saint-Étienne-du-Grès), then reaches Fontvieille, 38 km further, where he joins the first in a convergence basin.
