About

The old church of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer is the oldest monument in the city of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, a seaside resort in the French department of Charente-Maritime. Having assumed the role of parish church until the end of the 19th century, it was then left to abandon and replaced by the new church Saint-Palais. A restoration campaign rehabilitated it in the 1990s.

Parts of the building have been included in the additional inventory of historic monuments since 1973. This ancient parish church dates from the 12th century. A perfect example of Romanesque architecture, this church suffered particularly from the wars of Religion, when it was amputated with its nave, both arms of the transept and part of its bell tower.

Restored early, it was closed to worship in 1793 and entrusted to the administration of bridges and carriageways, which brought up part of the bell tower to serve as bitter. It was returned to the faithful in 1853, remaining the parish church of the city until the building of the new church. Long left behind, it was restored between 1994 and 1997.
