About

The church of Saint-Palais is the parish church of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, in the department of Charente-Maritime. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it replaces the old church of Saint-Palais, which was considered too demanding. It takes the name of the old church which owes it to a bishop of Saints of the sixth century, Palladius.

This neo-Roman-style church was built between 1909 and 1911 under the leadership of Abbé Léon Gerbier and under the direction of architect Georges Naud, in order to replace the old church a few metres away, which became insufficient for the practice of worship. The sanctuary, very simple, is shaped like a Latin cross. It has a nave of four spans, a large transept and a flat bedside pierced with three bays decorated with stained glass made by master glassmaker Gustave-Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux.

These stained glass windows represent St.Peter and St.Simon, guiding the patron saint of the church, St.Pallais, twelfth bishop of Saints in the sixth century. Other stained glass windows of the same kind adorn the crumbs, while those of the nave bear the signature of the master glassman Van-Guy.
