Celtic archaeological site
Vieux-la-Romaine is an archaeological site in the French department of Calvados, Normandy. Located on the territory of the commune of Vieux, about 15 kilometers south of Caen, it corresponds to the Gallo-Roman city of Aregenua. The ancient city is prosperous under the Roman Empire.
The capital of the city of the Viducas, Aregenua means "in front of the mouth" in Gaul, in this case that of the Guigne, a stream that flows into the Orne. The city has monuments and buildings that identify a Gallo-Roman capital of civitas. The city was created in the first century in the Augustan period and then reached its peak in the second and third centuries, with the completion of the romanization process.
It suffered a decadence from the third century but was never completely abandoned. The territory of the Viducas is merged with that of the Bajocas and the city belongs to the category of Gallo-Roman cities that lost the status of capital during the Lower Empire. Little information is known between the 5th and 7th centuries, the site continues to be occupied and the materials of the ancient city are massively reused.
Subsequently the village is mentioned in the sources...
