The House with a big peristyle or mistakenly Villa with a big peristyle, also called domus from the bottom of Old, is a Gallo-Roman domus of the archaeological site of Old Rome, the ancient Aregenua, located about 15 km south of Caen. The city was created in the first century and reached its peak in the second and third centuries. Touched by the invasions of the third century, the city is not provided with a enclosure and does not become the seat of a bishopric.
The territory of the Viducas, of which Aregenua is the capital, is absorbed by the city of Bayeux in an attested manner at the beginning of the fifth century and the city ceases to exist as an urban centre, even if the site remains occupied continuously. The house at the bottom of Old is a particular building whose peak is dated the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Due to the ruralisation of the city from the fifth century onwards, the remains of the old city are accessible to research and are the subject of early excavations from the end of the seventeenth century.
