About

The church of Notre-Dame-de-Cougnes is a parish church located in La Rochelle, in the French department of Charente-Maritime in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, and in the diocese of La Rochelle and Saintes. Founded in 1077 on a small eminence overlooking salt marshes, it is originally a modest chapel serving the population of the hamlet of Cougnes, ancestor of the city of La Rochelle, which, thanks to the protection of the Dukes of Aquitaine and Counts of Poitou, took its full development from the twelfth century. Almost entirely destroyed at the time of iconoclast thrusts in 1568, it was rebuilt from 1653.
