About

The church of Notre-Dame-des-Laves is a Catholic church in the commune of Sainte-Rose, on the island of La Réunion, French overseas department and region. A small building painted in pink colours located in Piton Sainte-Rose, near the Piton de la Fournaise volcano, it has a remarkable character due to the today solidified lava flow that entered the nave for only 3 meters, the rest of the casting having encircled the church, but without consuming it during the eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise in March 1977 that occurred outside the Enclos Fouqué, its last caldeira. In addition, there is now a statue called Virgo au parasol which was once installed in the Great Burn, and which had to be removed from it under the threat of lava burial during the 2000s. The site thus formed constitutes one of the tourist attractions in La Réunion in the region of the Côte-au-vent.

The stained glass windows on the theme of the volcano flow were created by Réunion vitraillist Guy Lefèvre.
