About

L'Église Saint-Laurent de Lattes is a Romanesque church located in Lattes, France.

History: Lattes, a former commercial port of Montpellier, is mentioned in the 12th century under a large number of designations: Terminium de Latis (1114), Palus cum molendinis (1121), Portus de Latis (1141), Ledda de Latis (1183), or Jurisdictio de Latis in 1192 in the cartular of the bishopric of Maguelone. The Saint Lawrence Church was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. The nave was rebuilt in the 17th century. For its apse and apsidiole, as well as the crows on the facade, the church has been classified as historical monuments since 22 July 1913.

Architecture: The church, covered with tiles, is built of cut stone assembled in large apparatus. It is one of the most beautiful examples of the use of the monspeliensis opus, a type of parallel setting that alternates assemblages of flat stones and assemblages of stones laid on the field. Unlike other buildings where it is only partial, the Monspeliensis opus occupies here the entire surface of the western facade and the bedside.
