The town hall of Aire-sur-l'Adour is an administrative building with the services of the town hall of Aire-sur-l'Adour, a commune in the French department of Landes. It is listed in the Historical Monuments by order of 11 May 2015.
Presentation: The building was built in the 17th century to be the palace of the bishops of Aire, officiating at the Cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Aire. It was acquired by the City in 1911 and became the Town Hall in 1927.
History: A first episcopal palace, built in the 12th century, was destroyed during the Wars of Religion in 1569 by Protestant troops of the knight of Montgomery. Bishop Gilles Boutault and his successor Jean-Louis de Fromentières had the bishopric rebuilt from 1627. The plans of the eighteenth century show that the gardens of the bishopric extended to Adour. The set included a secretariat, an orange shop, a fenil and attices. Aire having lost its status as the seat of a diocese because of the Civil Constitution of the clergy in 1790, the building no longer served as an episcopal residence until 1822, when Aire and Dax jointly became the seat of a new diocese.
