Rolling lift bridge
Pegasus Bridge (Pont Pégasus) is the name given to the Benouville Bridge after the operations of June 6, 1944 during World War II, in honour of British paratroopers whose winged horse Pegasus was the emblem. The bridge was inaugurated with its name of war on March 11, 1945. It was located on the canal of Caen by the sea in Normandy.
During Operation Deadstick, Operation Tonga, the code name for the bridge was Euston 1. Its takeover by a hand of British commandos, arrived at night by gliders, is one of the highlights of the landing of Normandy on D-Day. The original was replaced by a similar but longer new bridge in 1994.
