Commune of France
Calais is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region in northern France. Its inhabitants are called Calaisiens and Calaisiennes. The city of Calais is the most populated in the department, although it is not the capital city, this function belongs to Arras.
It is also one of the most extensive just behind the vast town of Eye-Plage. The commune is the seat of the Grand Calais Terres et Mers community, which has 98,913 inhabitants in 2022 divided into 14 communes. Located opposite the south-east of England, it is with its port (first of France for passenger transport) and the Channel Tunnel the main French city of liaison with Great Britain.
The commune, like that of Caudry in the department of the North, is known for its lace.
