maison carrée
The Square House is a hexastyle Roman temple completed in early 1st century AD in Nîmes, Gard. During its construction, the Square House is dedicated to the glory of the two grandsons of Augustus: consuls and military chiefs Lucius Caesar and Caius Julius Caesar. Over the centuries, the temple has become a consular house, a church and then a museum of ancient arts.
Today it is the best preserved Roman temple in the world. The square house is classified as historical monuments by the list of 1840. Since September 2023, it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
