The National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) is a French institution for higher education, research and dissemination of naturalistic scientific culture (life sciences, Earth sciences, anthropology and derived disciplines), member of the Sorbonne University alliance. Founded in 1793 during the French Revolution, the National Museum of Natural History succeeds the Royal Garden of Medicinal Plants created in 1626. This is one of the oldest scientific institutions in the world dedicated to the study of nature.
The establishment enjoys the status of a large establishment and is placed under the dual administrative supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Ecological Transition. The MNHN employs approximately 2,350 members, including some 600 researchers. It welcomes about 500 students a year: 300 in the various courses of the master's degree "Biodiversity, Ecology and Evolution", and about 200 in the doctoral school "Sciences of Nature and Man: Evolution and Ecology".
Since the 2014 reform, it has been headed by a President, assisted by Deputy Directors General.
