Oppidum
Bibrax is a Gaulish oppidum of the people, mentioned by Julius Caesar in his Comments on the Gauls' War, but whose location is not so far precisely determined. It is generally admitted that it is located in the territory of the commune of Saint-Thomas (Aisne), in Picardia. It is also called Old Laon Oppidum.
Location: This oppidum could be the oppidum of the "Vieux-Laon", located on horseback in the communes of Saint-Thomas and Saint-Erme-Outre-et-Ramecourt, in the Aisne.
Description: The barred spur oppidum is enclosed by a enclosure that limits a space of 32 hectares. He kept in good condition two lines of monumental fortifications, dated from the end of the first century BC. A bulwark that closes the site, to the north, is preserved on the entire route. A second bulwark was built later to form two distinct spaces in the oppidum. The main bulwark is of the type murus gallicus, while the posterior bulwark, of the type Fecamp, isolates the northeast part of the plateau. Two entries were also identified.
