About

The ancient theatre of Haut-du-Verger is a Gallo-Roman theatre building located in the commune of Autun, in the department of Saône-et-Loire. It was built during the first century, enlarged a few decades later to reach a diameter of 116 m but it seems already in ruins around the year 270. Discovered in 1976 thanks to aerial exploration — all its remains are buried — and studied thoroughly since 2012, it is part of the monumental adornment of a vast suburban sanctuary north-west of the ancient city of Augustostodunum. It is, with the Roman theatre of Autun located intra muros, the second building of shows of the same type of city.
