About

Couzan Castle is a medieval fortress built on a granite hill between the 11th and 15th centuries, currently in the municipality of Sail-sous-Cuzan. The heart of the possessions of the powerful Damascus family, from a younger branch of the Semur Sires (in Brionnais), the castle acted as a strategic lock on one of the old roads of the Auvergne. It still dominates the Lignon and Chagnon valleys, one of its tributaries.

Ruined in the 17th century, the fortress served in turn as a prison for the Revolution and later as a stone quarry. It was saved from the definitive demolition by its acquisition in 1932 by its current owner, Diana.
