Roman amphitheatre
arènes romaines de Béziers
The Béziers Arenas are an amphitheatre of the Roman colony Colonia Vrbs Julia Septimanorum Baeterrae built in the 1st century C.E., without any further precision, south of the Roman city of Baeterrae in Galla Narbonaise (now Beziers, Occitanie), near the ancient theatre, on the hill Saint-Jacques. On a site that has already experienced human occupation a few centuries before its construction, the amphitheatre seems abandoned at the end of the third century. In the Middle Ages, it served as a stone quarry and potter kilns were installed in its masonries before, until the mid-20th century, buildings built on its substructures. Cleared and excavated from 1987 to 2005, its ruins are partially built in a public garden and listed as a historical monument in 2013.
