The Carpentras aqueduct is an architectural element overlooking the Auzon River, north of Carpentras.
History: The water supply in the city of Carpentras has given rise to improvements since the Middle Ages. At the beginning of the 14th century, Pope Clement V had an underground canal built at great expense, whose terracotta pipes passed on the first arch of the current bridge using the principle of the siphon bridge. It allowed the water from the springs of Caromb (the spring of the Alps) and Barroux, to the fountains of the city. Four centuries later, which had become obsolete and defective, this first bridge was replaced by a new aqueduct, the construction of which, according to the plans of the Montpellier engineer Jean de Clapiès, began in 1720. The site was interrupted in 1721 because of the plague, the efforts being concentrated on the construction of the plague wall, and the consequences of the law system. The work resumed in 1729 in the district later called "the aqueduct of the fountains of Carpentras".
