The Arch of Carpentras is a monumental Roman arch of the first century located in Carpentras, Vaucluse. The building is classified on the first list of historic monuments in 1840.
History: The Arc is located in the historic centre of the city of Carpentras, between Saint-Siffrein Cathedral and the Palace of Justice. A city that, in ancient times, successively belonged to the Celts and the Romans. It was the capital of the Memini. According to historian Robert Turcan, the arch was built in the first century of the Christian era in homage to Emperor Tiberius, but perhaps also in memory of his father, founder of the colony dating from 30 BC, who had two names: "Colonia Julia Meminorum" and "Forum Neronis". During the construction of its Arc, the city is one of the 22 most important gaule cities. It marks the entrance to the forum, an official public square where all the important buildings of the city (curie, basilica...) are gathered. The Arc is therefore a precious vestige of the Roman occupation of Carpentras. According to historiographic tradition which cannot be confirmed, the Arc would have been used as a re-use in the Romanesque cathedral destroyed in 1404. Re-use...
