cathédrale Saint-Siffrein de Carpentras
The Cathedral of Saint-Siffrein de Carpentras is a Roman Catholic church that was the former cathedral of the city of Carpentras, in the department of Vaucluse, France. The building has been a historic monument since 1840. Since 2009, it has been the seat of the titular bishop of Carpentras.
In Gothic style, it was raised by order of the pope of Avignon Benedict XIII, on the site of the former Romanesque cathedral, which threatened to fall into ruins. From this old building still remains a Romanesque dome. It was the seat of the former diocese of Carpentras.
It is dedicated to Saint Siffrein of Carpentras (or Saint Siffredus), who was bishop of the city. The diocese was abolished during the Concordat of 1801 and incorporated into the diocese of Avignon.
