The chapel of the Black Penitents of Carpentras, or chapel of the Most Holy Crucifix, is a former Catholic chapel, now disused, of the commune of Carpentras, in the department of Vaucluse.
Location: Built within the walls of the old walls of Carpentras, the chapel of the Très-Saint-Crucifix is located two blocks from the apse of Saint-Siffrein Cathedral.
History: The Black Penitents of Carpentras formed a male brotherhood whose religious vocation was to assist and perform charitable works. They owe their name to their outfits worn during the processions of the great feasts, especially Holy Week. Their brotherhood was founded in 1511. In the 18th century, as they did not yet have a chapel of their own, they had the chapel of the Très-Saint-Crucifix built from 1738. The plans are attributed to Carpentrassian architect Antoine d'Allemand. The building work lasted three years. Brotherhood is forbidden during the Revolution and dispersed.
