About

The Château de Rouen is a former castle built from 1204 to 1210, the remains of which stand on the French commune of Rouen in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region. He played an important military role during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) and during the Wars of Religion (1562-1598). Vulnerable to artillery fire like other medieval fortresses, the castle was dismantled in 1591, with the exception of the dungeon (known as the Jeanne-d'Arc tower).

Rouen Castle

Recent archaeological excavations and new works by historians show the importance of the castle, an example of medieval military architecture, and especially of Philippian architecture. The Jeanne-d'Arc Tower, which is the former dungeon, is classified as historical monuments by the list of 1840. The Tower of La Pucelle (substructions) where Jeanne d'Arc was locked up has been the subject of an inscription as historical monuments since 13 July 1926.
