Rouen Museum was founded in 1828 by Adrien Charles Deshommets de Martainville, Mayor of Rouen. It occupies the convent of Sainte-Marie (17th century), in Rouen, France. He holds the label museum of France.

It has been part of the Réunion des musées métropolitains Rouen Normandie since 1 January 2016. Félix Archimède Pouchet was appointed first curator in 1828. Georges Pennetier was the second Conservative from 1873 to 1923, then Robert Régnier from 1924 to 1965...

It holds over 500,000 objects and specimens from around the world. Closed to the public for 10 years, during which the conservation team provides maintenance of the collections, reception of the researchers and exhibits outside the walls and, after six months of work focused on bringing the establishments receiving from the public to safety standards, the museum reopens on February 23, 2007. The museum of Rouen has been labeled Tourism and Handicap, motor and mental since 2009.

A project aims to bring together the museum and museum of Antiquities to make a new museum pole in 2028.
