basilique Saint-Seurin de Bordeaux
The Saint-Seurin Basilica of Bordeaux is a minor basilica erected by Pius IX, built in Bordeaux in the early 11th century. After being classified as historical monuments by the list of 1840, the basilica was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 as the Santiago de Compostela Roads. The basilica hosts relics (or supposed as such) of several saints, including Saint Seurin (Severin of Cologne) or Saint Fort.
Ancient origins: The Basilica of Saint-Seurin was built on an ancient necropolis where Christian burial symbols can be found from the fourth century. The epitaph of Flavinus, engraved in a sarcophagus lid between 365 and 385 AD under the representation of a chrism, bears witness to the Christian presence in Bordeaux from this time of late antiquity. This epitaph retracing the origins of the basilica building site was extracted during the excavations of the necropolis of Saint-Seurin in 1909. It is now on display at the Aquitaine Museum in Bordeaux.
Foundation legends: Named after the fourth bishop of the city and patron saint...
