Burdigala is the ancient name of the city of Bordeaux, founded in the first century BC by the Roman Empire.

Etymology: "Burdigala" would be composed of two aquitanic burd roots- which means "boiled" and cal- which would mean " shelter, cove" and would mean about "reservation in the marshes" in (proto-basque). This name evolved into Bordigala, then Bordale in Basque, Bordèu in Gascon and "Bordeaux" in French. Breton sailors call it Bourdel, with a very strong accentuation of the first syllable, which gives a long vowel; This form appears, inter alia, in the Garnier dictionary (1986). A river called Eau Bourde passing to the south of the city also retains this sense of "marsh".

Previous peoples: The first inhabited location is located at the mouth of the Devèze, a tributary of the Garonne, near the Gironde. The birth of Bordeaux is not linked to the qualities of the site, because, a mouth town situated on an advance of the Landes plateau, it has long been surrounded by pestilential marshes.
