About

The Royal Castle of Senlis dates back to the Merovingian era and was the place of the election of Hugues Capet in 987, but was entirely rebuilt under Louis Le Gros around 1130. It was used as a royal residence until the beginning of the 16th century and fell into ruins shortly before the Revolution, and the remaining buildings were mostly demolished in 1812 and 1861. The Priory Saint-Maurice is a foundation of Saint Louis from about 1262-1264 and was built near the royal castle.

Due to the insufficient number of monks, it was abolished in 1768, the cloister and chapel were demolished after the Revolution. The building of the monks, now a multipurpose municipal hall, and the residence of the 18th century prior, bought by the city of Senlis in 1956 to install the Vénerie museum. All the ruins of the royal castle and the priory of Saint-Maurice are located on the same plot, arranged in a park, and accessible for free every day except Tuesday.
