About

The sculpture of the Mount of Olives of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Strasbourg is located against the wall of the apse of the present chapel Saint-Laurent. Commanded in 1498 by Nicolas Roeder for the cemetery of Saint Thomas Church, she was transferred to the cathedral in 1667. The sculpture of Strasbourg Cathedral is interesting by its unusual dimensions: it is approximately nine meters long by three meters 80 wide and five meters high.

It is also characterised by the large number of characters represented (not less than 31 in all), the variety of their performances, the presence of a flora combined with fauna and the intensity that emerges from a scene that only represents a place and only a moment. Finally, the episode is strongly dramatized by allusions that constantly refer to other episodes of the Passion of Christ.
