église Notre-Dame-en-Saint-Melaine de Rennes
The Church of Notre-Dame-en-Saint-Melaine (commonly known as Notre-Dame-en-Saint-Melaine) is a parish church located in Rennes, France, in the French department of Ille-et-Vilaine in Brittany. It is bordered on its southern façade by the western end of Thabor Park. The sanctuary is dedicated to Saint Melaine, traditionally considered the first bishop of Rennes, who died here in the sixth century, then was buried on the hill of the Champ du Repos in Rennes, where the Saint-Melaine Abbey was built.
First abbey, the building served as a cathedral during the first half of the 19th century. Between 1803 and 1844, Saint Peter's Cathedral in Rennes, deliberately demolished at the end of the 18th century and not yet rebuilt, was no longer used as a cathedral or sanctuary. Étienne Célestin Enoch, bishop of Rennes, decided to temporarily install the seat of the diocese in the abbey of Notre-Dame-en-Saint-Melaine, which thus became pro-Cathedral, that is, temporary cathedral.
