Zoo
The Espace zoologique de Saint-Martin-la-Plaine, commonly known as the Zoo de Saint-Martin-la-Plaine, is a French zoological park located in Saint-Martin-la-Plaine, in the Loire department, between Lyon and Saint-Étienne. Opened in 1972 by Pierre and Eliane Thivillon, who still own it, it was the first zoo and refuge to collect seized or abandoned animals. The first gorillas come from individuals and rescues.
The park has since developed to present species from all continents, including the western plains gorillas and chimpanzees, mascots of the park. A permanent member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA), he is committed to ex situ conservation by participating in European programmes for endangered species (EEP). Through his Tonga Terre d'Accommodation association, he participates in the transfer of seized and abandoned wildlife to shrines that correspond to their natural environment.
Tonga Terre d'Accommodation, located near the park, is not accessible by the park's public.
