About

The church Saint-Lazare is a religious building located in the city of Le Mans, in the heart of the Saint-Georges district. It was built in 1892 in a district with a strong industrial boom in the city. The area was a former suburb, its economic activity concentrated on the Etamine in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

At the end of the 19th century, it was the gas and tobacco factories that employed many workers. Originally, the neighbourhood was split between Saint-Lazare and Saint-Georges. It will be the parish priest of Saint-Georges-du-Plain who will arrange to acquire the land to build the current building.

The parish appeared only in 1914. The name Saint-Lazare was chosen in tribute to the leprosy established in the suburbs in the 12th century. The church is neo-Roman style.

It is now confined to dense habitat. The bell tower was erected in 1934. Due to a great architectural sobriety, the interior decorations are rather rich.
