Church building
église Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux
The church of Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux, also known as Old Saint-Étienne, is an ancient church, now partially ruined, located in the old town centre of Caen. It must not be confused with the church of Saint-Étienne (former abbey abbey of the Men) located nearby. It was because of its illustrious neighbour that the Old Saint-Étienne received from the 11th century the qualifier of "Vieux".
This church has been classified as historical monuments since 22 August 1903. It had already been placed in the first list of 1840 before that date, but had been removed, like other buildings in Calvados, when the list was updated. The building has now been abandoned since the French Revolution and partially ruined since the 1944 bombings.
