About

The last "atelier de Cézanne" is located on the hill of the Lauves, in the north of Aix-en-Provence. It is here that Cezanne painted, between 1901 and his death in 1906, some of his last works. This bastide is now one of Aix's museums. She has been labeled Maisons des Illustres since 2012. Other sites bear the master's memory in Aix (Jas de Bouffan, Cabanon de Bibémus) and Marseille (Maison de l'Estaque).

History: Cezanne and her childhood friend Émile Zola have been walking around Aix from their teens. Cezanne lives and works among others in the bastide of his parents at the Jas de Bouffan, in his shed in Bibémus, in his house in L'Estaque Or Gardanne. Cezanne is 62 years old when he sells the Jas de Bouffan after his mother's death. In November 1901 he bought a small area of 0.7 hectares of arable land on the Lauves Hill, with a garden, pine feet, olive trees and fig trees, and bordered by the Verdon Canal. It has a panoramic view of the Sainte-Victoire mountain. From this mountain, Cezanne will give us no less than 44 oils and 43 watercolours.
