About

The temple of the Fâ mill is an ancient fanum, a Celto-Roman-inspired temple located in the commune of Barzan in the Charente-Maritime department of France. Perhaps dedicated to Mars, it is part of the category, rather rare in Roman Gaul, of temples built on a circular plane. It replaces, in the first half of the second century, one or perhaps two successive shrines.

Its cella, with a diameter of 21 m, takes place in the centre of a circular podium, also 36 m wide, the whole perhaps measuring 40 m high. Remaining remains at ground level, as with other buildings in the secondary agglomeration (perhaps Novioregum) of which it was part. All these ruins were classified as historical monuments in 1937 or 1939.
