Shipwreck
épaves de la rade de Saint-Pierre
The wrecks of the Saint-Pierre harbour are ships that all, except the Dhalia, were sunk during the eruption of Mount Pelee on May 8, 1902. During this eruption, it was estimated that 394 boats were in Saint-Pierre Bay. The disappearance of the Harbour Authority's archives did not permit an exhaustive list of shipwrecks caused by the disaster.
A review published in 1904 was based on statistics and testimonies. It was established by the National Navy Invalids Institution. At a minimum, it estimates the losses to 386 vessels and boats, mainly coastal and fishing vessels, 500 crew members and 33 passengers.
Foreign losses are minimum of 3 English long-haul steamers with 99 crew members, 2 American sailboats with 20 crew members, 3 Italian long-haul sailboats with 28 crew members and one passenger. Like the city, the ships were destroyed in an instant, the majority caught fire and was destroyed bodies and property. Fishermen were aware of the location of some wrecks.
They sometimes blocked their nets and were in rich areas...
