About

The church of Moutier is a Christian church, largely Romanesque, located in the lower town of Thiers in the department of Puy-de-Dôme. The foundation of this church is considered to be the oldest in the city especially because it is mentioned by Gregory of Tours in the sixth century in one of his hagiographic works. The church of the Moutier is dedicated to Symphorian of Autun, a Roman Christian martyr executed at the end of the second century, which is why it is also known as the Saint-Symphorian church of Thiers.

In Romanesque style, the building underwent numerous modifications and repairs over time, one of the most significant of which took place at the end of the 19th century, which amputated its former primitive choir. Today, completely restored and listed as a Historic Monument in 2006, it is the last building in the city to obtain this title.
