Church building
église Saint-Genès de Thiers
Saint-Genès Church is a Romanesque church in the medieval centre of Thiers, Puy-de-Dôme department. It is one of the most central points of the medieval city of Thiers, having been protected by all the enclosures that existed. It is known to be a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque art.
Built from the 6th century, the church owes its name to the martyr Genès, beheaded at the place called the Creux of Hell. The first buildings of the present building date from the 11th century and were completed in 1120. Reworked several times, the church lost in the 19th century its original porch, which housed a large staircase giving access to the main door.
Ranked a historic monument on the list of 1846, it is the first building in the city to obtain this title.
