The Abbey of Moutier is a former Benedictine abbey located in Thiers, Puy-de-Dôme department. The exact date of its foundation is unknown but its first written mention (1011) indicates that it is present from the beginning of the eleventh century. The abbey is located in the lower part of Thiers town called "le Moutier" on the left bank of the Durolle, at the foot of a rocky spur on which was founded the medieval city of Thiers. The abbey is bound and joined to the church dedicated to Saint-Symphorien since at least 1 year thousand. It was listed at the Historic Monuments in 2006. The name "Moûtier" comes from the medieval name "mustier" meaning "monastery".
Location: The abbey is located in the French department of Puy-de-Dôme, in the commune of Thiers. This area corresponds to the passage and outlet of the river Durolle from the foothills of Forez in the plain of Limagne. The Moutier district has been a high place in the history of the Thiernois since the beginning of the 11th century, even from the Carolingian period.
